It seems, these days, that people are obsessed with the idea of “wanderlust”. This term, not to be confused with the 2012 movie starring Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, refers to a thirst people have to wander and see and experience things all over the world. And trust me, I have it, too.
But even more so, I have something that I’ll diagnose as “Pack Up My Life Lust” (and since that phrase is way too long to look cute printed over a Pinterest photo, let’s refer to it as PUMLL). PUMLL occurs when you go on a trip and suddenly find yourself making plans to pack up your entire life and move there. This happens to me wherever I go, without fail.
Two weeks ago, I visited my beloved best friend in her new home, Los Angeles. It was my first time in California and within the first few hours, she and I were making serious plans about what our lives could be like if I moved there. We hiked mountains, laid on beaches, and drank straight from coconuts. And best of all? We were together. “Yep, I could definitely pack up and move here”, I thought.
A week later, I found myself on the opposite coast on my family’s favorite island: Hilton Head. I’ve been visiting Hilton Head Island a few times a year since I was five but this time, I went with a shiny new college degree, a wide open future, and, suddenly, a search history full of “Hilton Head hospitality jobs”.
PUMLL is real, and maybe I’m the only one who has a hard time letting a vacation be just that. For me, a vacation becomes a week-long day dream about what my future life could be like in these wonderful places.
And believe me, PUMLL is great. It is 100% responsible for my upcoming adventure: moving to Orlando to work for the Disney Company. In February, I visited Disney World for a long weekend with my family. Now I’ve been to Disney World several times, but this time I went a few months before an impending graduation date and no clue what was waiting for me on the other side of that stage. We were there for about 2 1/2 days, and those days were filled with great food, mesmerizing shows, and a camera roll full of memories. Fast forward three weeks, and I was signing my acceptance into the Disney College Program, gleefully committing to a 6 month work program in Disney World.
Now I realize, of course, that not everyone can pack up their lives and follow their personal PUMLLs to their favorite spots. Wake up, Sarah: People have jobs! People have lives! People have perfect Indian take-out restaurants super close to their apartments! So, I’ve compiled a list of some great sites where you can snag some keepsakes so you can think of your dream spot during everyday life.
Whether you’re a tea drinker, coffee aficionado, or simply a mug hoarder, you can’t go wrong with the Starbucks Local Collection. This collection features travel mugs with unique designs to represent what makes each of the 50 states remarkable. So, instead of packing up your life and moving to your favorite state, you can be sweetly reminded of it anytime you enjoy a cup of joe.
This Etsy shop is great and will put whichever latitude and longitude coordinates you’d like on a necklace. This Etsy seller has made over 1000 sales and still has a perfect 5/5 stars. These necklaces are dainty, beautiful, and something you can wear everyday. If you can’t follow your PUMLL to your special spot, at least you can wear it close to your heart.
Let me start by saying that even if you don’t have a bad case of PUMLL, you should get your hands on one of these hats. They are sturdy and make you look cooler than the Fonz next to a jukebox. These hats are embroidered with various United States airport codes, and it’s no wonder they’re always selling out of them. You know the rush you get when you see your favorite spot’s airport code on your itinerary? Now you can feel that way every time you put on your new hat.
Or maybe vintage decor is your thing. Zazzle has a wide variety of vintage travel posters from locations all over the world. Maybe you’ve day dreamed about moving to Italy to make pasta, or Costa Rica to surf and sell fresh fruit on the beach. Well, now you can limitlessly daydream without quitting your day job.

So, go ahead and dream of what it would be like if one day you decided to pack it all up and move to your favorite spot. Or, take the leap and do it! But, if you’re not quite ready or you love where you are now, check out these awesome gifts and treat yourself, you adventurous goddess. There’s no harm in dreaming.
…to the craziest thing I’ve ever done.
That’s right I started a blog. Huff Po should be here any minute to tell me how I’m just another millennial ruining the housing market with my blog-writing and avocado-toast-eating.
So why am I here? Well, pals, it’s simple really. I am on the edge of an obscure abyss: I’m about to enter a future that is 100% uncertain. And, to be honest, that really excites me. I could be anything! I’m like Liz Gilbert at the beginning of Eat, Pray, Love! (Except I’m really more like her at the end of the book, because over the past few years I’ve gained 15 pounds and somewhere along the line bought a yoga mat).
Another reason? I love my city… but sometimes I feel that it goes under-appreciated and under-explored. So this under-employed millennial is going to go out and explore it for you! Indianapolis is thriving and I want to catch every awesome bit of it while I can.
But my time is limited, because I’m off to my next grand adventure as soon as the summer closes. I can’t talk much about it yet, because I want to give you all the juicy details in an upcoming post. But, stay tuned! Exciting things are happening and I want to take you all with me.
